Everyone has seen the type of hair extensions that look fake because the color doesn’t match. You can spot it a mile away!

One of the most important goals in obtaining a successful head of hair extensions is having a proper color match. Even in solid blond colors, there are very subtle differences in the color scheme.

Every time I choose a hair extension color I am careful to make these subtle differences show in the finished look.  The bottom line is… the better the hair extension color matches your own hair, the more real your hair extensions  will look.

To me this is a must!

The highest quality you can buy.

Great Lengths is known for being the most sought after, top quality in hair extensions on the market.

They’re are many imitators, but none who attain the high standard of quality that is only available from Great Lengths.

I am bombarded with calls from stylists and individuals who would like to purchase Great Lengths hair from me so the can put it in themselves.

Great lengths does not sell to the public. You must be a certified Great Lengths stylist in order to purchase their products. I happen to be one… but… I am contractually obligated NOT resell the hair without the service. If I were to be caught diverting Great Lengths products without the service I would lose my account with them.

Many stylists will tell you they are using Great Lengths hair because it has the best reputation for quality but few actually do. Certified Great Lengths stylists must go through a very expensive, and very intense, training in order to have the privilege of being a Great Lengths service provider. Everyone else is just bluffing.

Quality isn't cheap!

The expression “You get what you pay for” is never more true than when applied in the world of hair extensions.

You should expect to pay around $2,000 for the hair and application for good quality hair extensions.

You can get into the $3,000 + range in places such as Beverly Hills but you should avoid it because it doesn’t necessarily come with any significant increase in quality. It just costs more because it’s in Beverly Hills.

If you are bargain hunting, you can find people who will do your extensions for $600 to $1,200 but this should be seen as a red flag! You will not get good quality at those prices! Chances are, those stylists are both inexperienced and using very cheap hair. A very bad combination.

Get Real shots of your prospective stylist's ACTUAL work!

Sure they have before and after shots, but is it of their own work, or the work from the stock photos provided by the company who they buy their hair from?

Not only do you want to see the over all finished look, you want to see close up photos of the detail of their work. You want to know what to look for.

Here’s what to look for:

Check for a Good Haircut. Be skeptical if in all of the after shots the hair is styled curly with a curling iron. A lot of times stylists will use tricks like this to hide their mistakes.

Good Color Matching. Does the hair of the extensions look like the hair on their head? A lot of times there will be a two tone effect because the extension hair that was put in doesn’t match their own.

If possible, ask for Pictures of the Bonds Themselves. This will really tell you whether or not they know what they are doing. The bonds should be neat, evenly spaced, and not too big.

Referrals are worth their weight in gold!

Ask for a referral that you can call directly and find out about the history of their relationship with your prospective stylist.

Have they been coming back for years? Have they experienced much or any noticeable hair loss? How many if any extensions do they loose over the period they have their extensions in?

There's no substitue for experience!

They should have a minimum or 5 years experience and they should be doing it at least one head per week. It is surprising how rare this is.

The majority of hair extension stylists will do an application once every one or two months. Really! This is why when you walk into most salons and ask about extensions, you’ll see some confusion as to who in the salon actually does the hair extensions.

Bring your shovel!

It is a simple matter of physics. If you have something attached to small strands of your hair for several months at a time you will loose SOME hair! There is just no way around it if you have long term hair extensions. There is always SOME risk. People who tell you otherwise CANNOT be trusted.

If someone tells you this, it can mean either one of two things. Either a) They have very little experience and they don’t know what they are talking about. Or b) They are FLAT OUT LYING TO YOU!

Until someone figures out how to defy the laws of gravity (ie; flying cars and hovering skate boards) there will always be a little hair loss. How little depends on who is doing your extensions.

When you have someone who really knows what they are doing, your hair loss will be very little. One of the biggest reasons why you should be getting your hair extensions done by me.

She flys out to see me  form New York to Los Angeles once every 3 months to have her extensions re-done and she loves her hair!

Katy's hair is really fine and we use hair extensions to create thickness and length.

She has a lot of layers in the back and we use hair extensions to fill her hair in and provide density.

(After hair extensions) The color match of Katy's hair is perfect. Her hair is long, thick, and shiny. A huge improvement over her own!

The back blends perfectly with her own hair. There is no point on the hair where the connection is visible. It looks exactly like it is her own hair!

On Katy we used 3 bundles of great lengths color #4 and one bundle of color #3  in 16″ length.

The price for the hair was $372. with shipping and the price of the application was $1,495.

She had gone to  a local “high end” salon in her area and without researching her extension stylist, she just went to the person in the salon who does extensions. There’s always one or two.

What the client didn’t know was how inexperienced this stylist was and what kind of wild ride she was in for.

Firstly the stylist told he that she would receive NO hair loss from her method. (A big red flag and total BS). She had the extensions put in and she liked them, her hair had never been that thick and long before.

Then… 4 weeks later the client’s extensions start coming out… hair attached!  She goes back to the salon and says “hey, my hair’s coming out” the stylist tells her “no, that’s not from the extensions, your own hair is just “shedding”".

So two weeks and $1,600 later she has a new set of extensions applied. This process continues and the the time span gets shorter from every 6 weeks to every 2 weeks the client is in there getting more extensions each time emerging with less and less of her own hair.

Finally, after finding me on the Internet I get a call from the client, telling me she wants ME to do her extensions. After seeing these horrifying photos, I tell her I won’t touch her hair for at least 6 months.

What went wrong here? The extension bonds are too big, the sections of hair taken are too big and sloppy, and the hair has been piggy backed or doubled up at the base.

Still think hair extension bargain hunting is a good idea? This woman has been made practically bald by an amateur hair extension stylist!

She needed to get herself a nice wig and give her hair a chance to grow back in. She took my advice, and 6 months later, we put in a proper hair extension application and she has been happy ever since.

The steam from prolonged use of a steam room can weaken your hair extension bonds. The same is true for saunas.

It is wise to keep your extensions dry as often as possible.  It is never a good idea to walk around with your hair wet in a bun.

Think of your hair extension bonds as paint on the inside of a house.  It is meant to stay dry. This will give you the best results.
